FOUNDED IN 1909 AS THE FEDERAL FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION (FFA). IN 1932 THE FFA BECAME THE FEDERAL DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE (FDFL) OWING TO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE THEN VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (VFL). WHEN THE AGREEMENT ENDED IN 1965 THE FDFL BECAME THE FEDERAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (FFL). IN 1981 THE FFL WENT INTO RECESS WITH TRUSTEES ELECTED TO REINSTATE THE LEAGUE AS A COMPETITIVE FOOTBALL BODY. IN 1982 THE TRUSTEES FORMED AND ENTERED A FEDERAL TEAM IN THE VICTORIAN METROPOLITAN SUPERULES COMPETITION.
Congratulations on coming up with such a great website. JR Bentleigh
ReplyDeleteWell done. I have just briefly looked but already found Dad.....Four rows down and five in is my DAD Thanks DM Hampton
ReplyDeleteWhat a great record of the Federal League. Thanks for taking the time to record it for all to see. AJ Chelsea
ReplyDeleteA fantastic site. So great to be able to relive some Federal League history. BK East Brighton
ReplyDeleteI have just seen this excellent site and am so pleased to see that the Federal League hasn't been forgotten. WT Black Rock
ReplyDeleteWhat a great competition the Federal was, if only its ilk existed today.....
ReplyDeleteGR Bonbeach
Loved the write up in the Bayside Leader Community Newspaper which is to be congratulated for the story on the Federal League. JR Mordialloc
ReplyDeleteGreat read. Well done on a great website. JC Cheltenham
ReplyDeleteGreat article. Really enjoyable to read, because of the accuracy and feeling conveyed. Well done. THANK YOU.SL Sandringham
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story in the Bayside Leader. The Federal League website has certainly brought back many memories of what once was the Fabulous Federal League. Sadly missed. DS Ormond
ReplyDeleteHaving followed the Federal League in the sixties and seventies, one only has to read between the lines to gain an insight into the reason why the Federal League sadly is no more. Thanks for the explanation PH Cheltenham
ReplyDeleteI don't always read the local newspaper because I don't always get a copy delivered. How glad that I did this week and then to be able read the article on the Federal League and have a look at the FFL website which I thoroughly enjoyed as I relived some past memories of a great football competition sadly no longer with us. Great stuff. WB Hampton East
ReplyDeleteI have a 1970 Federal League jacket from a representative side vs Eastern Districts if you are collecting things. SA Highett
ReplyDeleteThanks for that SA I will arrange for it to be collected and added to the National Sports Museum Federal League Collection. Much appreciated Alan Maher
ReplyDeleteI share the sentiments of WT from Black Rock - loved the Federal League. While I used to be a strong supporter of local football I don't go at all now as the standard of today's footy just like the old grey mare, "ain't what it used to be". MJ Dingley
ReplyDeleteTerrific article in today's Moorabbin Leader which will no doubt bring back many memories of the Federal Football League. How I wish we could return to those great days in local footy.
ReplyDeleteWA Hampton East
The Federal League may be no more BUT it certainly lives on with this website. TT MCKinnon
ReplyDeleteI am living overseas now but thanks to the internet I have been able to read some of the very interesting history of the Federal League. I well remember the strong Springvale sides and Highett's almost fourpeat in the early seventies. These days being away from Australia I only have football memories but I am pleased to say that they certainly include many from the Federal League. JG Canada
ReplyDeleteWould today's local football attract a Grand final crowd of 6000 as reported in the article in the Sept '79 Moorabbin Standard News. Don't think so! WB Beaumaris
ReplyDeleteAs well as the Federal I also miss the great VFA and believe that those responsible for football in the not too distant days gone by have a lot to answer for. JA Mordialloc
ReplyDeleteOne of the Federal League's greatest strengths was it's non affiliation with the Victorian Football Union which enabled the Federal to control it's own destiny. As soon as it joined the all embracing Victorian Metropolitan Football League in the late seventies all of that changed. The VMFL as it existed is now gone taking the Federal League with it. AFL Victoria is now local football's "big brother" controlling clubs with what I for one consider to be it's draconian Points System. Perhaps its time for local football leagues to take back control of their own destinies. "What do others think"? PG East Bentleigh
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more with PG of East Bentleigh. Bill T East Brighton
ReplyDeleteI was a Highett supporter in those days and loved reliving the article by Russell Holmesby from the 1979 Moorabbin Standard. However despite the risk of being told that I live in the past I share the view of MJ of Bentleigh. PH Moorabbin
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Alan! Great work. There is far more to Melbourne's football history than the VFL and VFA. It is important that local football history is also recorded forever. Thank you for all your efforts. Anon
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Alan and Ross. Recording footy history is so very important.
ReplyDeleteParticular thanks to you Ross for your assistance and guidance in helping me compile my club's history, a soon to be released book on the Dingley Football Netball Club, titled 'Dingo Tales'.
Without your help, our very early years would have remained a mystery.
YoU are a fair dinkum legend and your passion for local footy is second to none.

Thanks Santo for your Glenhuntly Football Club photos and your 1970 FFL representative jacket Vs the Eastern District Football league which will be a welcome addition to the National Sports Museum Federal League collection. A great piece of memorabilia AM
ReplyDeleteLove seeing the old Black Rock photos on your website. The players of those days had a passion that today's footballers don't appear to have. DK Sandringham
ReplyDeleteJust read the Bayside Leader article and for the life of me can't understand how any club could have played a suspended player in a Grand Final. As a player you don't get many chances to win a Premiership let alone squander an opportunity to do so. LY Oakleigh
ReplyDeleteHaving played with a couple of Federal League clubs in my time I was thrilled to see my old team photo on this terrific website. Thanks and thanks again. JA Edithvale
ReplyDeleteWould love to see a photo (or maybe two) of Springvale from the early -mid seventies. Does anyone out there have a photo they could let you have to add to this excellent site? TW Mulgrave
ReplyDeleteI don't know - let's ask them. Alan Maher
ReplyDeleteWow-that didn't take long at all. Refer "Historical Photos' link for Springvale's 1977 Premiership team. Alan Maher
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Federal website - love it and love those old photos. LY Clayton
ReplyDeleteCan anyone throw any light on Freighters Football Club which played in the Federal during the fifties. RR Edithvale
ReplyDeleteIn 1951-52 Heatherton Football Club was sponsored by Freighters Limited, a local engineering company and played as Freighters Football Club for those seasons. Refer: History of the Federal Football League (P7) by Ross Mccullogh. A Maher
ReplyDeleteMy son has just shown me this website as he remembered that I used to follow the Federal League in days gone by. Only those who were around in those day would remember what a great competition the Federal was. Thanks Alan, Ross and the Leader Newspaper for bringing back some fantastic memories for myself and others around my vintage and ensuring that the Federal lives on. JW Rosebud
ReplyDeleteThe Federal League was a great competition-sadly missed today. JY Oakleigh
ReplyDeleteCan anyone throw any light on the Naval Football Club (Cerebus) which played in the Federal during the fifties. RR Edithvale
ReplyDeleteNaval Football Club played just the one season in the Federal (1959) before transferring to the Nepean Football League. Refer: History of the Federal Football League (P7) by Ross McCullogh. A Maher
ReplyDeleteWell done Leader Newspaper and Paul Amy for publishing the recent interview article with Clayton's Mick Quinn in the Moorabbin-Glen Eira Leader which I can only assume was prompted by the earlier article on the 1979 Federal Grand Final. However a close read of both suggests that time may have clouded some of the facts. Irrespective a great follow up story. PS Dandenong
ReplyDeleteWell done indeed but not a great reflection on the person concerned. TA Mulgrave
ReplyDeleteA great website that asks the question "was it all worth the huge price that was paid in 1981". Considering local football's standing today I for one would have to say a big NO.MR Cheltenham
ReplyDeleteBeing a supporter of local footy I would love to be able to say that today's footy is as good as it ever was but to use the phrase of George Washington "I cannot tell a lie" and agree wholeheartedly with the comment made by MR of Cheltenham.
ReplyDeleteAs do I. Great website though-thanks for bringing it to us. WS Highett
ReplyDeleteTerrific article on the Federal League in this weeks Mordialloc Leader. Great website as well. Well done to all concerned. JM Edithvale
ReplyDeleteMany great players called the Federal League home. Thanks for remembering them and reminding us what a great competition the Federal was. JH Springvale South
ReplyDeleteReferred to this website by a friend who loved the Federal League. Loved reading the history and seeing those historical photos. Great stuff BB Donvale
ReplyDeleteSome great clubs were cleared to the VFA over the years, what a great pity that the VFA once a two Division competition is also no more. Another example of good things buggered up in the name of progress! EP Parkdale
ReplyDeleteBy my reading of this excellent website there are one or more clubs (still in existence) that brought about the demise of the Federal Football League by their selfish self interest actions. No need for me to name them as they would well know who they are. SHAME. WR East Bentleigh
ReplyDeleteOf all the comments that I have read none are more pertinent than the one made by WR East Bentleigh who has really "hit the nail on the head". AJ Dingley (One who knows)
ReplyDeleteA great website that I will revisit to remind me of what the Federal Football League was - a great tough competition that is sadly missed in today's football environment. TM Chelsea
ReplyDeleteAs there are some ex Federal League clubs competing in the Southern Football Netball League have you considered putting a link to this website on the SFNL site. Just a thought. RJ Clarinda
ReplyDeleteThanks RJ Clarinda for the suggestion however two approaches to the SFNL Chairman/Vice Chairman along this line have not received the courtesy of a response. Alan Maher
ReplyDeleteThis website has renewed an interest in the local football club. While no longer residing in the area I will nevertheless follow their fortunes in the coming season with interest. Thanks for the effort that you have made to ensure the Fabulous Federal Football League is not forgotten. RT SUNBURY
